Pornography is a lifesaver?

I had someone tell me once that pornography had been a lifesaver for him. When everyone that mattered had rejected him, and he was seriously suicidal, he turned to pornography to escape the pain, and he felt it had saved his life. Now, years later, whenever he was faced with a significant challenge, he would turn to pornography. Only now he is realizing it isn’t saving his life, in fact it is one of the main reasons he is unhappy with his life. The deception was that pornography had saved his life. It may have felt like it at the time, but the truth is it enslaved him. That is the way Satan works. He offers solutions that seem to help in the short run, but in the long run rob us of our freedom, make our lives miserable, and enslave us.

Many people have the perception or feeling that pornography is helping them in some way. There is no true asset in viewing pornography. Here is a list of some common perceived advantages to pornography:
It helps me deal with, escape, or survive: stress, rejection, loneliness, unhappiness, feeling unloved.
In each of these, the person is deceived because pornography ends up adding to their stress, increases rejection from real women, they are more alone than ever, even more unhappy, and have less love in their life. Isn’t it amazing that what a person is using to deal with these problems makes the problem so much worse. That is like fixing a flat tire by letting the air out of another tire.

Having a conscious awareness of this can be helpful, but that doesn’t change the way things feel. There will still be a craving for pornography when a person becomes stressed, or feels some other negative emotion. Their subconscious will still be programmed to seek for pornography to solve the problem, and the cravings will persist. As I coach a person with Christ-centered tools, these deceptions are completely uncovered in the light of truth, and no longer pull a person back into pornography. I also help them address the stress and other feelings, so those aren’t a problem either. True freedom is possible!
